Most complaints about outstation cabs are not about the car or the driver. They are about the bill at the end of the trip, which is higher than the number someone said on the phone. The reason is usually simple: some charges were never mentioned. This guide explains each charge in plain words, so that when you book an outstation cab from Chennai, Bangalore, Madurai or any other city, you know what to ask and the final amount matches what you expected.
Start with the three numbers that matter
Every outstation fare is built from three parts: the kilometre charge, the driver allowance and the extras. The kilometre charge is the rate for your car type multiplied by the kilometres counted. The driver allowance is a daily amount for the driver's food and stay on the road. Extras are everything else, such as toll, parking, state entry and night charges. A quote that shows only the first number is not a full quote.
How kilometres are counted
For a round trip, kilometres are normally counted from the moment the car leaves its starting point to the moment it comes back, and many bookings apply a daily minimum. That means that on a three day trip you pay for at least three times the minimum, even if you drive less. For a one way drop, the kilometres are the distance from pickup to drop.
Ask two questions: what is the daily minimum, and what is charged for each kilometre beyond the plan. Also ask whether local sightseeing in the destination city is counted within the same kilometres. It nearly always is.
Driver allowance in simple words
The driver allowance, sometimes called bata, is paid for every day the driver is away from home. It covers his meals and small expenses. On a one way drop it is usually already part of the fare. On a multi day round trip it is added for each day. Check whether it is shown as a separate line or already included, and whether it applies for a day on which the car did not move.
Toll, parking and state entry
Toll is charged at plazas on national highways and expressways. Out of Chennai, the Bangalore and Madurai highways each have several plazas, and a return journey has its own set. Some quotes include toll and some add it on actuals at the end of the trip. Either is fine if you know which one it is.
Parking at a hotel, temple or beach is normally paid by the traveller. If you cross a state border, such as Chennai to Tirupati or Bangalore to Hosur and beyond, a state entry or permit charge may apply. Ask for it by name.
What a night halt is
If your trip runs overnight and the driver has to rest at the destination, the booking may add a night halt charge. It is separate from the driver allowance in some quotes and combined in others. For long drives a rested driver is a safety matter, not a cost to avoid, so plan the halt rather than trying to skip it.
Night driving charges are different. They apply when the car is driven late at night or very early in the morning, often between a fixed late hour and early morning. Ask what hours count as night.
Waiting time and extra stops
A short stop for tea or a restroom is never charged. Longer waiting, such as two hours at a hospital or a function, may be charged by the hour after a free period. Extra stops that change the route add kilometres. Tell the booking about all the stops you already know, and you will get a quote that holds.
A checklist before you pay
Before you confirm any outstation booking, ask for the following and keep it in writing or in the app.
- Car type and seats, with luggage space for your bags
- Kilometre rate, daily minimum and rate for extra kilometres
- Driver allowance: included or extra, and for how many days
- Toll, parking and state entry: included or on actuals
- Night driving and night halt rules
- Waiting charge, free time and the cancellation policy
- Pickup time, address and the driver's details shared before the trip
Questions
Is toll included in the fare?
It depends on the quote. Some fares include toll and some add it at actual cost at the end. Check which one applies before you confirm.
What is driver bata?
Bata is the driver allowance, a daily amount for the driver's meals and expenses while he is away from home on your trip.
Do I pay when the car waits at my destination?
Short breaks are free. Longer waiting may be charged per hour after a free period, and on a round trip the daily minimum usually covers the day.
Can I see the full fare before booking on Oray?
Yes. Fares and charges are shown before you book, along with the cancellation policy, so you can compare it with any other quote.
